What to Expect at Your First Appointment with Family Nutrition Solutions
If you’ve booked your first appointment with us — or you’re thinking about it — there’s a good chance one question is sitting at the front of your mind: what actually happens?
It’s the thing we get asked most often, and honestly, we get it. A lot of people come to us after appointments elsewhere that felt rushed, judgmental, or handed them a generic meal plan. So if you’re bracing for someone to hand you a list of foods you can’t eat and send you on your way — take a breath. That’s not us.
Here’s exactly what your first appointment looks like, start to finish.
Before you walk through our doors
Once your appointment is booked, you’ll fill out your intake paperwork ahead of time. This includes a basic health history and a thorough symptom questionnaire. And when we say thorough, we mean it — we’d rather ask too many questions up front than miss something that matters.
We’ll also verify your insurance before your visit, so you’re not left wondering about coverage. (More on the money piece below, because we know that’s on your mind too.)
That’s really all we ask of you beforehand. No food journaling, no prep work, no showing up with your life perfectly organized. You just have to show up.
Choosing virtual or in person
Your first appointment runs 60 to 90 minutes, and you get to choose whether it’s virtual or in person.
Most people choose in person for this first one because it’s a longer visit and it tends to be the easiest way to feel truly connected to your provider right out of the gate. But if virtual fits your life better, that works beautifully too. There’s no wrong answer here.
Speaking of your provider: you’ll be matched with the dietitian on our team who’s the best fit for what you’re working through. You’re not getting a random assignment — you’re getting the right person for you.
What we actually do in that hour-plus together
Here’s the honest truth about your first appointment: mostly, we listen.
We start with your health history, because your story didn’t start the day you booked with us. We build a timeline together — when things started, what’s changed, how you got here. From there we dig into your symptoms in real detail, so we understand not just what you’re experiencing but the full picture around it.
We’ll go through your medications and supplements — everything you’re currently taking. Then we look at what a typical day actually looks like for you: sleep, your daily routine and schedule, stress, what you eat, what you drink. All of it. We’re not looking for a highlight reel; we want the real version.
From there, we talk through your big-picture goals — what’s motivating you, and just as importantly, what’s gotten in the way before.
Along the way, we’ll teach as we go — explaining more about the condition you came in with, or why a particular change actually helps your health. Because “just do this” has never once helped anyone stick with something. Understanding the why does.
Setting your very first goal — together
Before you leave, we’ll land on your first goal together.
The key word there is together. Some people walk in knowing exactly where they want to start. Others want us to help point the way. Both are completely normal, and we meet you wherever you are on that spectrum. This is a collaboration, not a prescription.
And this is where our approach really shows up: we’re big believers in sustainable habit change. That means we’re not going to overhaul your entire life in 90 minutes and wish you luck. You’ll leave with one or two action items — small, doable, and built for real life — rather than a mountain you’ll abandon by next Tuesday.
Wait — what about my labs?
If you’ve got labs, you might be surprised that we don’t dive into them on day one. That’s intentional.
We hold your lab review for your second appointment for a reason: we want your entire health history in front of us first, so we can read those results in the context of you — not as numbers floating in a vacuum. It also means we can actually take our time and walk through every part of them in detail, instead of squeezing it into the last ten minutes of an already-full first visit.
So your labs get their own dedicated appointment. They deserve it.
What you leave with
By the end of your first appointment, you’ll walk away with:
- One or two action items to start working on right away
- Your lab review appointment already on the calendar
- A follow-up plan — usually a few additional visits scheduled to keep your momentum going
To get things rolling, follow-ups are typically weekly for about the first month. That closer cadence early on is where the real traction happens.
The part everyone asks about: insurance
Your appointments are typically covered by insurance, with no copay. Yes, really. Nutrition care that’s rooted in your whole health and accessible — that’s a hill we’re happy to stand on.
Here’s the bottom line
You don’t need to have it all figured out before you come in. You don’t need to have “been good” this week, or have your fridge stocked with the right things, or know exactly what your goal is.
You just need to show up as you are!
