Blood Sugar Management Dietitians
Blood Sugar Problems Don’t Start with a Diagnosis. They Start with Patterns.
Energy crashes after meals. Intense cravings in the afternoon. Waking up at 3am and not knowing why. Feeling hungry an hour after eating. These are blood sugar signals – and most people experience them for years before anyone connects the dots.
At Family Nutrition Solutions, our registered dietitians in Wilmington, NC specialize in identifying and addressing insulin resistance before it becomes a diagnosis – and building the nutritional foundation that stabilizes it for the long term. Available in-person in Wilmington, NC and virtually across North Carolina.
Insulin Resistance Shows Up in More Places Than You’d Expect
Energy crashes after meals or in the mid-afternoon
Post-meal energy dips are a classic sign of reactive hypoglycemia – a pattern where blood sugar rises quickly after eating and then drops. It’s directly addressable through meal composition and timing.
Intense cravings for sugar or carbohydrates
Cravings are a blood sugar signal, not a willpower failure. When blood sugar fluctuates, the body sends urgent hunger signals – particularly for fast-acting carbohydrates. Stabilizing blood sugar breaks the craving cycle.
Difficulty losing weight despite eating well
Lab results in the “borderline” range – fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1c, or insulin
Borderline results are not a reason to wait. Hemoglobin A1c in the high-normal or pre-diabetic range responds better to early nutritional intervention than to watchful waiting. We act early.
Brain fog, poor concentration, or mood shifts that follow eating patterns
The brain runs on a steady glucose supply. Blood sugar swings directly affect cognitive function, mood stability, and mental clarity – often in ways that aren’t recognized as metabolic until they’re mapped against eating patterns.
Family history of type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome
Blood Sugar Stability is the Foundation of Metabolic Health. We Build it With You.
Blood sugar management is at the center of most of the metabolic work we do at Family Nutrition Solutions. Whether you’re working to prevent pre-diabetes, managing energy and cravings, or dealing with the downstream effects of insulin resistance on weight and hormones, the nutritional approach is the same: identify your patterns, address the drivers, and build something sustainable.
We use continuous glucose monitor (CGM) data, lab review, and a thorough dietary assessment to build a plan that fits how your body responds – not a generic low-glycemic template. CGM is available as an optional add-on for both individual 1:1 appointments and our Blood Sugar Blueprint group program.
Blood sugar and metabolic appointments are available in our Wilmington, NC office and virtually across North Carolina.
Blood sugar nutrition counseling tends to be the right fit when:
“I eat well, and I exercise but I still crash every afternoon. I’m tired of being tired.”
Afternoon crashes are almost always a blood sugar pattern – and they’re fixable. We identify what’s driving yours and restructure your eating to eliminate it.
“My doctor said my hemoglobin A1c is borderline, and I need to change my diet before my next appointment. I don’t know where to start.”
Borderline hemoglobin A1c is exactly when nutrition makes the most difference. We build a plan that’s specific to your labs and your life.
“I can’t stop eating sugar even when I don’t want to. It feels like something is driving it.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What is insulin resistance and how does it differ from diabetes?
Insulin resistance is a broad term for patterns where blood glucose doesn’t stay stable – rising too high after meals, dropping too quickly, or swinging between extremes throughout the day. These patterns can exist for years before someone meets the clinical threshold for pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. Addressing dysregulation early prevents the progression and resolves symptoms like energy crashes, cravings, and brain fog that significantly affect quality of life.
What is a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and should I use one?
A continuous glucose monitor is a wearable device that tracks blood glucose levels in real time throughout the day. It provides data that no lab test can match – showing how your blood sugar responds to specific meals, sleep, exercise, and stress. CGM is available as an optional add-on for both individual 1:1 appointments and our Blood Sugar Blueprint group program. We use this data to refine your plan with precision.
Why does it matter whether I see a registered dietitian versus a health coach or nutritionist?
A registered dietitian is a licensed provider – graduate degree, clinical internship, national board exam required. A health coach or nutritionist carries no standardized credential in most states. A Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) is a serious board-certified credential, comparable in rigor to the registered dietitian. Our team includes both registered dietitians and CNSs. Both a registered dietitian and certified nutrition specialist can bill insurance.
What does the first blood sugar appointment cover?
Ninety minutes of full intake – your metabolic history, eating schedule, energy patterns, sleep, stress, and lab history. Labs are not reviewed at this first visit; we save that for the second appointment once we have the right panel in hand.
Will I be given a strict diet to follow?
No strict protocol – we build a flexible, specific plan around your eating habits and schedule. The goal is targeted adjustments that stabilize blood sugar without turning your entire diet upside down.
Do I need to cut carbohydrates completely to manage blood sugar?
No. Carbohydrate quality, timing, pairing, and quantity all matter – but eliminating carbohydrates is rarely necessary or sustainable. Most patients see significant blood sugar improvement through smarter carbohydrate management rather than elimination.
Insulin resistance is fixable.
You don’t have to wait for a diagnosis to address it.
