Food Sensitivity Dietitian in Wilmington, NC
Food Sensitivities Are Real. But They’re Also Often Misidentified – and Over Restricted.
Food sensitivity testing is widely marketed and wildly inconsistent. Patients come to us having eliminated twenty or thirty foods based on panels with questionable validity, and they still feel the same. Or they’ve spent years on restrictive diets without ever knowing which eliminations helped.
At Family Nutrition Solutions, our registered dietitians in Wilmington, NC take a systematic, evidence-based approach to food sensitivities – identifying what’s driving your symptoms, determining which eliminations are warranted, and building a dietary framework that is both effective and nutritionally sustainable. Available in-person in Wilmington, NC and virtually across North Carolina.
Symptoms That Seem Related to Food Deserve a Systematic Approach
Bloating, gas, or discomfort that seems tied to eating
Food-related gut symptoms are among the most common drivers of food sensitivity testing. However, gut symptoms often reflect underlying dysbiosis, motility issues, or fermentation patterns rather than true immune-mediated sensitivities. Identifying the actual mechanism determines the right intervention.
Skin reactions, eczema, or rashes that may be food-related
Headaches, brain fog, or fatigue that follows eating certain foods
A long list of foods you’ve eliminated without feeling better
Positive food sensitivity test results you don’t know how to interpret
Histamine intolerance symptoms
Food Sensitivity Management Requires Structure. We Provide It.
The most reliable tool for identifying food sensitivities is a properly conducted elimination diet followed by systematic food reintroduction. We guide patients through this process in a way that is methodical, nutritionally complete, and diagnostic.
We use the Mediator Release Test (MRT) – a clinically validated blood test that measures the reactivity of white blood cells to specific foods and chemicals – as one of our primary tools for food sensitivity identification. For patients who follow our MRT protocol or our Revitalize elimination diet, we provide a structured meal plan as part of the process. MRT testing is conducted through Oxford Biomedical Technologies (nowleap.com).
For situations where MRT is not indicated or accessible, we use structured elimination and reintroduction protocols to identify triggers systematically – without relying on tests that measure exposure rather than true reactivity.
Food sensitivity appointments are available in Wilmington, NC and virtually throughout North Carolina.
Food Sensitivity Nutrition Support is Most Useful When:
“I’ve eliminated gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, and corn and I still feel terrible. I don’t know what else to cut out.”
Eliminating more foods is rarely the answer when extensive restriction hasn’t worked. We take a step back, assess what’s happening, and identify whether the issue is with what you’re eating or something else entirely.
“I had a food sensitivity test that came back with 40 reactive foods. I can’t eat anything. What does this mean?”
An IgG panel with 40 positive results almost certainly reflects exposure and gut permeability, not true sensitivity to 40 foods. We help you interpret the results accurately and build a rational protocol from there.
“I know something in my diet is causing my symptoms, but I can’t figure out what. I need a structured approach.”
A properly conducted elimination diet – or MRT testing followed by a targeted protocol – is the most reliable way to identify food-related symptom drivers. We guide you through it systematically so that by the end you have a real answer.
How We Work Together
Systematic, evidence-based nutrition counseling for food sensitivities – identifying what’s driving your symptoms rather than eliminating everything and hoping for the best.
Step 1 – Symptom and Dietary History
Your first visit is 90 minutes – we map your full symptom history against your eating patterns, review any previous elimination attempts or test results, and determine the right identification approach before any changes are made.
Step 2 – Testing or Protocol, Plan Built
At your second visit, we review your labs and any MRT results together and build your individualized food sensitivity identification and management plan – including a structured meal plan if you are following the MRT or Revitalize elimination diet protocol.
Step 3 – Reintroduction and Tolerance Building
The goal of food sensitivity work is not permanent restriction – follow-ups guide systematic reintroduction, identify true triggers, and expand the diet back toward nutritional completeness and variety.
Insurance Coverage For food Sensitivity Nutrition Counseling Depends on Your Symptoms and Plan
Food sensitivity counseling does not follow a single billing path – coverage depends on what other symptoms or conditions are documented and what your specific plan covers. We work with you before your first appointment to understand your benefits and identify the most favorable path, so you have a clear picture before you commit to a visit.

We are in-network with the plans above. Coverage for food sensitivity visits is determined case by case based on your documented symptoms and plan details – whether you see a registered dietitian or a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) on our team, we will help you navigate it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a food allergy and a food sensitivity?
A food allergy involves an IgE-mediated immune response that can cause immediate and potentially severe reactions including anaphylaxis. A food sensitivity involves non-immune-mediated reactions that produce delayed, variable symptoms like bloating, headaches, fatigue, or skin changes. The diagnostic approach, management, and urgency are different for each.
What is the Mediator Release Test (MRT) and how does it work?
The Mediator Release Test is a clinically validated blood test that measures how white blood cells react to exposure to specific foods and food chemicals – looking at actual cellular reactivity rather than just antibody levels. Unlike IgG antibody panels, MRT measures a functional response, which makes it a more reliable tool for identifying foods that are driving inflammatory or sensitivity reactions. We use MRT as one of our primary food sensitivity identification tools and guide patients through an MRT-based elimination and reintroduction protocol. Testing is conducted through Oxford Biomedical Technologies at nowleap.com.
Is immunoglobulin G (IgG) food sensitivity testing reliable?
IgG antibody testing is widely marketed for food sensitivity identification but has limited clinical validity. Elevated IgG to a food indicates repeated exposure, not necessarily a pathological reaction. Major professional organizations do not endorse IgG testing for diagnosing food sensitivity. We discuss what existing IgG results mean in context and guide you toward evidence-based identification methods from there.
Will I get a meal plan?
Yes – if you follow one of our structured elimination diet protocols. Patients who complete the MRT protocol or our Revitalize elimination diet receive a structured meal plan as part of the process. For other approaches, we build individualized dietary guidance that is specific to your symptom pattern and nutritional needs.
Will I have to stay on an elimination diet permanently?
No – the goal of a structured elimination is identification, not permanent restriction. Once we identify which foods are genuinely problematic, we determine the threshold of exposure that triggers symptoms and – where possible – work on improving tolerance through gut healing strategies.
Why does food sensitivity identification require a registered dietitian rather than an at-home test kit?
At-home food sensitivity test kits identify exposure, not pathological reactivity – they have no validated clinical basis for diagnosing food sensitivity. A registered dietitian is trained in evidence-based elimination protocols, clinical interpretation of symptoms, and nutritional risk assessment for restricted diets. Both registered dietitians and Certified Nutrition Specialists (CNSs) practice at our office.
Can I schedule without a doctor's referral?
Yes – you can schedule directly. If your insurance plan requires a referral or documented diagnosis for coverage, we identify that during your benefits verification before the first visit.
How does the first food sensitivity appointment work?
A 90-minute session where we take a thorough symptom history, review your current diet and any previous elimination attempts or test results, and determine the right identification approach before recommending any changes. Labs are reviewed at the second visit if indicated.
