Insurance Coverage for Nutrition Counseling
Many health insurance plans include benefits for nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian. Family Nutrition Solutions accepts several major insurance plans and provides a complimentary benefits check after you schedule your first appointment and complete your intake forms.
This helps you understand the coverage information available to us before your appointment begins.
Use Your Insurance Benefits for Personalized Nutrition Care
Cost should not prevent you from getting the nutrition support you need. Family Nutrition Solutions works with several major insurance plans to make one-on-one nutrition counseling more accessible. Depending on your specific policy and the reason for your visit, your nutrition counseling appointments may be covered with little or no out-of-pocket cost. Coverage varies by insurance company, employer plan, diagnosis, location, and individual policy. After you schedule and complete your intake forms, our team reviews your insurance information and the reason you are seeking care. We then complete a complimentary benefits check based on the specific information you provide.
Insurance Plans Accepted by Family Nutrition Solutions
Family Nutrition Solutions currently accepts:

Insurance participation and plan benefits can change. Being listed as an accepted insurance company does not mean that every policy offered by that company includes nutrition counseling benefits. Our team will review the benefits associated with your specific policy after you schedule and complete the required intake forms.
Nutrition Counseling for Your Health Concerns
Insurance coverage for nutrition counseling differs from one policy to another. Your benefits may depend on your diagnosis, the reason for care, and the Medical Nutrition Therapy benefits included in your plan.
Nutrition counseling may be available for concerns such as:
- Weight management
- Digestive symptoms
- Diabetes and prediabetes
- Insulin resistance
- PMOS/PCOS
- High cholesterol
- Fatty liver disease
- Hormonal concerns
- Pregnancy and postpartum nutrition
- Pediatric nutrition concerns
- Disordered eating patterns
- General preventive nutrition care
Coverage for a particular concern cannot be confirmed until we know your specific insurance policy and the diagnosis or reason for care that may be used for billing.

Understanding Your Nutrition Insurance Benefits
Insurance language can be confusing. These are some of the most common ways nutrition counseling benefits may be structured.
| Type of Benefit | What It May Mean for You | Important Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Medical Nutrition Therapy benefits | Your plan may cover nutrition counseling related to specific diagnoses, symptoms, or medical concerns | Coverage may depend on the diagnosis, provider network, and number of permitted visits |
| Preventive medical benefits | Eligible Medical Nutrition Therapy services may be processed as preventive care without a copay or deductible | Preventive coverage depends on your policy and the reason for care |
| Copay-based coverage | You may owe a set amount for each appointment | The amount is determined by your insurance plan |
| Deductible-based coverage | You may be responsible for the negotiated rate until your deductible is met | Some nutrition benefits may be exempt from the deductible, while others are not |
| Out-of-network benefits and superbills | You may pay Family Nutrition Solutions directly and submit a superbill to your insurance company for possible reimbursement | Out-of-network reimbursement is not guaranteed |
| No nutrition benefit | Your plan does not include covered Medical Nutrition Therapy with Family Nutrition Solutions | Self-pay appointments and structured care plans are available |

Insurance Verification Is Not a Guarantee of Payment
In-Network and Out-of-Network Nutrition Counseling
An in-network provider has an agreement with your insurance company. Your plan may offer lower out-of-pocket costs when you see an in-network provider. If Family Nutrition Solutions is out of network with your plan, you may still have out-of-network benefits. After you pay for an eligible appointment, Family Nutrition Solutions may provide a superbill. A superbill is a detailed receipt containing the service and billing information your insurance company may require when considering reimbursement. You can submit the superbill to your insurance company, but your insurer determines whether you will be reimbursed and how much it will pay.
Insurance Coverage Compared With Self-Pay Care
The quality, depth, and personalization of your care are the same whether you use insurance or pay out of pocket. Every patient receives the same thoughtful evaluation, individualized recommendations, education, and support.
| Insurance-Based Care | Self-Pay Care |
|---|---|
| You receive the same personalized nutrition care provided to every Family Nutrition Solutions patient | You receive the same personalized nutrition care provided to every Family Nutrition Solutions patient |
| Coverage depends on your individual policy | Fees are established by Family Nutrition Solutions |
| A benefits check is completed after you schedule and submit your intake forms | Insurance verification is not required |
| Copays, deductibles, coinsurance, diagnosis requirements, or visit limits may apply | Payment is made directly to Family Nutrition Solutions |
| Claims are submitted to your insurance company | No insurance claim is required |
| Your insurance company determines the final patient responsibility | You know the published appointment fee |
| Some services may not be covered | You may schedule individual visits or purchase a structured care plan |
The quality, depth, and personalization of your care are the same whether you use insurance or pay out of pocket. Every patient receives the same thoughtful evaluation, individualized recommendations, education, and support.
Functional Lab Testing and Insurance
Family Nutrition Solutions does not bill functional lab tests through insurance because we are not able to submit those laboratory charges to insurance companies. Functional lab testing is paid out of pocket and is separate from nutrition appointment fees. You may be able to use an HSA or FSA card for eligible lab expenses. Nutrition appointments related to deciding whether testing is appropriate or reviewing test results are billed separately and may be eligible for insurance coverage depending on your plan. Visit our Functional Lab Testing page to learn how testing is selected and how results are used to support a personalized nutrition plan.
Frequently Asked Questions About Insurance Coverage
Which insurance plans does Family Nutrition Solutions accept?
Family Nutrition Solutions currently accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, UMR, Aetna, Aetna State Health Plans, Meritain Health, and Cigna. Coverage varies among individual policies, so our team checks your specific benefits after you schedule and complete your intake forms.
Why do I need to complete my intake forms before you check my benefits?
We need your specific insurance policy information and details about the reason you are seeking care. This helps us identify the diagnosis or reason for care that may be used for billing and allows us to check the benefits that are most relevant to your appointment.
Will my nutrition counseling appointments be fully covered?
Some plans cover eligible Medical Nutrition Therapy as preventive care without a copay or deductible. Other plans require cost sharing, limit the number of appointments, or only cover care related to certain diagnoses. We will share the benefit information available to us, but your insurance company makes the final coverage decision after processing the claim.
Will I have a copay?
Some patients have preventive Medical Nutrition Therapy benefits that do not require a copay. Other plans require a copay, coinsurance, or deductible. We will let you know what we find during your complimentary benefits check.
Does my deductible apply to nutrition counseling?
It depends on your policy. Some preventive benefits are available before the deductible is met. Other plans apply Medical Nutrition Therapy charges to the deductible.
Do I need a referral from my physician?
You can self-schedule an appointment without obtaining a referral first. If your insurance plan requires a physician referral or other documentation, Family Nutrition Solutions will usually contact your healthcare provider to obtain what is needed after you schedule.
How will I know what my plan covers?
Schedule an appointment and complete your required intake forms. Once we have your policy information and the reason you are seeking care, our team will complete a complimentary benefits check and contact you with the information available to us.
Is insurance verification a guarantee that my claim will be paid?
No. A benefits check reflects the information available before the appointment. Your insurance company makes the final payment decision after the claim has been submitted and processed.
What happens if my insurance denies the claim?
You may be responsible for the unpaid balance. Our team can help explain the information we receive, but coverage disputes and formal appeals must ultimately be handled with your insurance company.
Can I still make an appointment if Family Nutrition Solutions does not accept my insurance?
Yes. Self-pay appointments and structured care plans are available. Family Nutrition Solutions may also provide a superbill for eligible services if your insurance policy includes out-of-network benefits.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes service, diagnosis, provider, and billing information. You can submit it to an out-of-network insurance plan for possible reimbursement. Receiving a superbill does not guarantee that your insurance company will reimburse you.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Family Nutrition Solutions accepts HSA and FSA cards for eligible expenses. Contact your plan administrator when you are uncertain whether a particular service or functional lab expense qualifies.
Does insurance cover functional lab testing?
Family Nutrition Solutions does not bill functional lab tests through insurance because we are not able to submit those laboratory charges to insurance companies. Functional lab tests are paid out of pocket. Nutrition appointments associated with selecting a test or reviewing the results may be covered depending on your insurance benefits.
