Gut Health and IBS Dietitian in Wilmington, NC
Your Gut Is Sending Signals. We Help You Read Them.
Bloating after meals you’ve eaten for years. Pain that comes and goes without explanation. Trips to the bathroom that derail your day. If you’ve been told your tests are normal and you just need to “manage stress,” you deserve a better answer.
At Family Nutrition Solutions, our registered dietitians in Wilmington, NC look at what’s driving your gut symptoms – microbiome imbalances, motility issues, the gut-brain connection, and the dietary patterns that are making things worse – and build a plan that addresses the root cause. Available in-person in Wilmington, NC and virtually across North Carolina.
Signs Your Gut Needs More Than General Advice
Bloating, cramping, or abdominal pain that comes and goes
Irregular gut motility, bacterial imbalances, and fermentation patterns all produce these symptoms – and each requires a different approach. We identify what’s happening before recommending any changes.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) diagnosis with symptoms that aren’t well controlled
Irritable bowel syndrome affects how the gut moves, how it senses pain, and how the microbiome functions. A diagnosis alone doesn’t tell you why your gut is reacting or what to do about it. We dig into the drivers.
Alternating constipation and diarrhea
Symptoms that flare with stress
The gut-brain axis is real – stress directly alters gut motility, inflammation, and microbiome composition. Addressing the nutritional and lifestyle factors that regulate this connection is part of how we work.
Food reactions that are hard to predict
A history of antibiotic use, gut infections, or digestive surgery
These events alter the microbiome in lasting ways. If your gut symptoms began or worsened after one of these experiences, the history matters, and we factor it into the plan from the start.
Good Gut Health is Built – Not Prescribed
Gut health is one of our core areas of focus at Family Nutrition Solutions. We understand that irritable bowel syndrome, microbiome imbalances, and functional gut symptoms require a different kind of attention than a food list or a probiotic recommendation.
We look at the full picture: microbiome composition, gut motility, inflammatory markers, eating patterns, stress load, and the history of your digestive health. Then we build a targeted, sustainable plan – not a temporary elimination protocol aimed at managing symptoms while the underlying issue remains unaddressed.
Gut health appointments are available in-person at our Wilmington, NC office and virtually throughout North Carolina.
Gut health support tends to be the right fit when:
“I’ve had IBS for years. I’ve tried elimination diets, and nothing sticks. I need someone to actually look at what’s going on.”
You’re not looking for another food list to follow. You want to understand your gut and build something that works long-term. That’s exactly how we approach it.
“Every time I eat, I feel like I’m playing a game I can’t win. I never know what’s going to set me off.”
Unpredictable gut reactions are exhausting – and they’re usually a sign that something systemic is going on rather than a single food trigger. We work to identify the underlying patterns and reduce the guesswork.
“My gastroenterologist said everything looks normal, but I still feel terrible. Where do I go from here?”
Normal test results don’t mean the gut is functioning well. Functional nutrition looks at how the gut is performing – microbiome balance, motility, gut-brain signaling – not just whether it’s structurally intact.
How We Work Together
One-on-one nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian who digs into the root of your gut symptoms – not just the list of foods to cut out.
Step 1 – Gut History, Full Picture
Your first visit runs 90 minutes and covers everything relevant to your gut – symptoms, history, past diagnoses, what you’ve eliminated, what you haven’t, and what your gut is telling you.
Step 2 – Labs Reviewed, Plan Built
At your second visit, we review your labs together – gut function markers, microbiome indicators, inflammation, and nutrient status – and build your individualized gut health plan from what we find.
Step 3 – Ongoing Gut Support
Follow-ups track symptom patterns, refine the plan as your gut responds, and make sure progress stays on course over time – adjusting as the picture evolves.
Insurance coverage for gut health and IBS nutrition counseling varies by plan.
Coverage for gut health and irritable bowel syndrome nutrition counseling depends on your specific plan and the symptoms or diagnoses documented at the time of your visit. We work with you before your first appointment to understand your benefits and identify the most favorable path forward – so you have a clear picture before you commit to a visit.

We are in-network with the plans above.
Whether you see a registered dietitian or a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) on our team, we will help you understand and maximize your coverage.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and can nutrition help?
Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional gut disorder affecting motility, pain signaling, and microbiome balance. Dietary modification is a first-line treatment – many patients see significant symptom improvement with an individualized nutritional approach, especially when the specific pattern (constipation-predominant, diarrhea-predominant, or mixed) and the underlying drivers are identified and addressed directly.
What is the low-FODMAP diet and is it the right approach for IBS?
The low-FODMAP diet is a structured elimination approach that can meaningfully reduce IBS symptoms for many people – but it is not a treatment for IBS, and it is not meant to be followed long-term. Importantly, reacting to high-FODMAP foods is not the same as being sensitive to them. These foods feed gut bacteria, and when the microbiome is imbalanced, fermentation of FODMAPs produces symptoms. That reaction is more likely a sign of gut dysbiosis than a sensitivity to the food itself.
Why does my gut react to foods it used to tolerate fine?
The gut microbiome shifts over time – influenced by antibiotic use, stress, dietary changes, gut infections, and other factors. When the microbiome is imbalanced, foods that were previously well-tolerated can begin producing symptoms because the bacterial environment processing them has changed. This is a sign of dysbiosis, not a new sensitivity to the food.
What makes a registered dietitian the right provider for gut health?
A registered dietitian completes a graduate degree, a supervised clinical internship, and a national licensing exam – making it the most rigorous nutrition credential available. The title nutritionist is unprotected in most states and requires no formal training. A Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) is a legitimate board-certified credential. Our team includes both registered dietitians and CNSs.
Can I come in without a referral from my gastroenterologist?
Yes – a referral is not required to schedule. If your insurance requires one for coverage, we flag that during your benefits check before the first visit. We also coordinate with your gastroenterologist as needed once care begins.
What will the first visit look like?
A 90-minute intake focused entirely on building context – your full symptom history, eating patterns, what has been tried before, and what hasn’t worked. Labs are not reviewed at the first visit; that happens at visit two once the right panel is in hand.
Will I get a food list or meal plan?
Not a generic one. We build a practical, individualized plan around what you already eat – adjusting specific elements rather than replacing your diet wholesale. The goal is something workable, not a template.
Can gut health issues cause symptoms beyond digestion?
Yes. The gut influences immune function, mood, energy, skin health, and hormonal regulation. Microbiome imbalances are linked to fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, and skin conditions. Addressing gut health often produces improvements well beyond digestive symptoms.
How long does it take to see improvement in gut symptoms?
It depends on what’s driving the symptoms. Some patients see meaningful change within two to four weeks of targeted dietary shifts; others working through dysbiosis, or microbiome rebuilding, may see a longer timeline of three to six months. We set realistic expectations based on your individual picture from the start.
