SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)

A holistic approach to reducing bacterial overgrowth, supporting digestion, and restoring gut balance.

What is SIBO?

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when bacteria that normally belong in the large intestine begin to overgrow in the small intestine. This can interfere with digestion and nutrient absorption, often leading to symptoms such as bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, food sensitivities, diarrhea, constipation, or a mix of both.

SIBO is an often overlooked contributor to persistent digestive symptoms, especially when bloating and discomfort don’t improve with basic dietary changes.

What Causes SIBO?

SIBO typically develops when the digestive system isn’t moving or functioning optimally. Contributing factors may include:

• Impaired gut motility: Slow movement of food through the small intestine allows bacteria to accumulate

• Low stomach acid or enzyme output: Reducing the body’s ability to control bacterial growth

• Disrupted gut-brain signaling: Stress can affect motility and digestive secretions

• Previous gut infections or food poisoning: Which can alter gut function

• Structural or functional changes: Such as adhesions, surgeries, or chronic constipation

How Nutrition Counseling Can Help with SIBO

SIBO requires more than just short-term food avoidance. Nutrition counseling helps address both the overgrowth itself and the underlying conditions that allowed it to develop.

At Family Nutrition Solutions, we can help you:

  • Confirm the presence of SIBO through functional lab testing
  • Support symptom relief through structured, temporary nutrition strategies
  • Reduce bacterial overgrowth using evidence-informed protocols
  • Support gut motility and digestion to prevent recurrence
  • Maintain adequate nutrition during treatment
  • Transition back to a more varied, nourishing diet once symptoms improve

Our Approach at Family Nutrition Solutions

We take a step-by-step approach to SIBO that balances temporary symptom relief with a proven healing protocol that will address the root cause and prevent recurrence.

  • Core Foundations: Identifying foods that may be triggering symptoms, supporting appropriate meal spacing, and incorporating foods that support motility

  • Deeper Healing: Functional lab testing to identify type of SIBO and possible root causes

  • Long-Term Care: Nutrition and lifestyle strategies to prevent recurrence of SIBO

Patients typically experience reduced bloating, improved digestion, better energy, and greater confidence reintroducing foods.
